The Old North 14th Cemetery - Henry Township
Located in the 300 block, on the East side of north 14Th. Street, where the city parking lot is today, was at one time the location of one of the first cemeteries in the city of New Castle. It was first deeded to cemetery trustees; Ashael Woodward, Abraham Elliot Jr. and Rene Julian shortly after the town of New Castle was laid out. The deed was not recorded until 1844. At this time the entire Cemetery Corporation was changed and John Powell, Miles Murphey and Adam Bean were elected trustees of the cemetery. In September of 1883, William Clift petitioned the court that new trustees be elected due to the others all being deceased. Acting on this petition, the court named Miles Read, Elias Day and William Clift as the new trustees of the cemetery. The commissioners then deeded the cemetery to the newly elected cemetery trustees and not to the city of New Castle. In 1922 the city of New Castle had plans of building the New Castle YMCA on this site, but after a long drawn out court battle by citizens who wanted the cemetery to remain and be turned into a city park. These plans were changed when land was donated to them on Church Street. In March of 1922 all of the grave markers were moved to a location in the Southmound Cemetery where they remain today. All records indicate that the remains in the old cemetery were never removed. An older relative of mine that lived across the street from the cemetery at that time states that she "never saw any remains removed from the old cemetery." It is common knowledge that, that is the truth. No records can be found to verify any removals.
Tombstones at Southmound Cemetery
The following is a list of burials that were recorded sometime in 1922 before the stones were removed. Someone took the time to draw up a plat map showing the location of all known graves in the old cemetery so that the stones could be placed in the same order when they were taken to the Southmound cemetery. I found this old plat map in the Henry county Historical Society's Museum. The first grave (#1) was in the NE corner. They were recorded east to west. There were a total of six rows running east to west with a total of 20 graves in each row. Grave #1 was unreadable, and grave #118 (Franklin Emery) was in the southwest corner. Grave space #s 119 & 120 had no stones. There were many other unmarked burials in this cemetery that were never recorded.
