Andrew Nicholson granted letters of administration on the estate of Henry Fitch, decd. Auction at New Castle on Jan. 20.
Thomas Marshall granted letters of administration on the estate of Eli Warner, decd.
Jasper N. Wheeler granted letters of administration on the estate of John M. Wheeler, decd.
Elder Seth Bennett preached at Cadiz.
Florence, only daughter of Prof. Geo. W. and Lois G. Hufford, died Dec. 31, 1871, aged 6 months, 13 days.
"Eli Jay, the Principal of the Rich Square Graded School, is one of the ripest scholars and most efficient educators in the county."
Burglars strike home of Will Outland and sister near Spiceland.
New Castle: "Charles Colburn has moved into his new livery stable"; "Our redoubtable knight of St. Crispin, John N. Reichart, has removed his shoe shop. He may now be found one door east of Gough's blacksmith shop, on the north side of Broadway, on Christian Ridge."
N.T. Nixon of Spiceland Township appointed deputy sheriff.
Dr. Newby & Dr. Cox appointed physicians for poor in Greensboro Township.
Difficult court case: Garret v. Jabish Luellen, administrator, and Walker, attorney. In 1864 Cornelius Smith borrowed $800 to pay army substitute, with Garret as surety for loan. Smith failed in business and Garret paid off note, amounting to $1,000 with interest. Garret now claims he never authorized signing note.

Spiceland: "Samuel Porch has arrived safe at home from the everglades of Florida, bringing with him an alligator which fortunately fell prey to him whilst hunting on the St. John's River. The animal is now on exhibit at his residence."
Spiceland: Charles Bogue bought out William Pierce in livery stable.
Spiceland: "Lou Coffin, who left home last summer, and has been teaching at Carson City for some months, has now turned up in San Francisco. She contemplates spending the spring and summer months beyond the Rocky Mountains."
Spiceland: J.B. Outland living on Edgerton farm 1.5 miles south of town.

John Shriner recovering from smallpox.
Rich Square Graded School staff: Eli Jay, principal; Miss Susannah Bond and William A. Macy, assistants. Mrs. Jay also teaches grammar and Latin.
Dispute over black children in township school at Hopewell, Dudley Township. Walters family, Democrats, objected to attending with black children. Trustee, principal, and most parents favored integration. Walters boy attacked and injured Winslow boy, aged about 15. Walters charged with assault and arrested.
Married, Jan. 11, at residence of James Clements, Esq., in New Castle, by W.R. Kistler, William F. Ferris and Annie Ferris.
Dougan Clark plans to practice medicine in Spiceland.

William Brosius of Knightstown had saloon burned at Lewisville.
Mrs. Elijah Bennett died suddenly last Sunday.
Harrison Harvey died Wednesday in Prairie Twp. of softening of brain.

Report that John S. Byer has smallpox is false.
Joseph R. Leakey, Dudley Twp. pioneer, died Thursday and buried Saturday. Leakey a resident of Henry County for 50 years.
