Estray notice, Prairie Twp. James Evans took up cow valued at $20 by R.J. Edelman & Robert F. West; certified by J.M. Reed, JP.
New Castle: "Charles Ray, a former member of the whisky ring of this place, was shot at Anderson on Tuesday night last."
Jacob A. Hasselmeier, former resident, married wealthy young lady of Missouri.
35 years ago J. Insco Williams painted two portraits for Judge Jehu T. Elliott for $2. Now charges $200 to $1,000.
D. Newby has town property for sale.
Mr. Keiser of Anderson proposes to open foundry and machine shop in New Castle if citizens will give bounty.
Calvin Buffkin of Greensboro killed on Jan. 14 in explosion of steam saw mill engine near Rushville. Two other men killed. William Worth present. Buffkin left parents and sister, buried at Spiceland on Jan. 16. "He was a young man of industrious habits, of kind disposition and irreproachable character."
Mrs. Emma Way, daughter of James S. Ferris, died at Troy, Ohio, Sunday evening last, aged 22 years, 2 months. Born and partly raised in New Castle. Brought back to be buried at South Mound. [see correction Feb. 9]

Correction to Emma Way obituary on Feb. 2. Emma Thompson is deceased. Ellen Way is her sister.
Sarah Teas died at home of daughter Martha D. Parker near Richmond on Feb. 5. "The deceased was one of the most estimable women we ever knew; one whose earnest practical piety endeared her to all who met her."
Long obituary of William Saint, Sr. Born March 9, 1781, Perquimans Co., N.C., died at home of youngest son William Jr., Jan. 24, 1871, buried in "old graveyard" on Duck Creek, funeral by Caleb Johnson. Visited Northwest Territory in 1813. In 1816 settled on Walnut Level in Wayne County. George Bundy, George Shortridge, and Thomas Symons, all now deceased, settled about same time; Shortridge shot by Ben Green, "an Indian chief." Settled in Henry County in 1836, entered 13 80-acre tracts, all in Henry County. Antislavery man. Voted for Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, J.Q. Adams, and Harrison for president; Jonathan Jennings for governor. Free Soiler, supported James G. Birney for president.
Daniel Foust residence, 1.5 miles east of New Castle, destroyed by fire on Friday night. He was away at a spelling school. Mrs. Foust was next door at Mrs. Sweigart's.
Spiceland: Alexander Whitely and Esther Moore of Milton were married last week.
Spiceland: Pres. Joseph Moore of Earlham College gave lecture on "Good Living." Detailed account.
Spiceland: Joel Johnson, lived about half a mile southwest of Rich Square Friends Meetinghouse, killed by runaway horse-thrown from sleigh against fence.
Spiceland: Library Association moved books from Academy to William Dawson's shop and appointed him librarian.

J.F. Westerfield teaching at Greensboro.
Married, by Elder D.H. Gary at his residence in New Castle, Feb. 2, William Frazier & Miss Sarah F. Miller, all of Henry County.
Luther J. Byer, former resident of New Castle, now of Lincoln, Neb.
Mrs. O.P. Jennings suffered spinal injury in accident. "Her age will prevent her rapid recovery, tho' seems to be improving."
Died, near Albion, Minn., Jan. 21, J.H., son of W.W. Moore of New Castle. Born Dec. 2, 1842, moved from Muncie to New Castle, 1860. Enlisted at beginning of war and served as drummer in Co. G, 26th Indiana Inf. Married about 1865 at Camp Douglas, Ill., to Miss Clara Whitlock and moved to Minn. Leaves wife & one child. [see correction Feb. 9]

Mrs. Lucy Karney, colored, lives near Hagerstown, 40 years a slave, Presbyterian.
Rogersville: "We think that we have one of the most quiet little villages in the state." Merchants: Fegley & Luellen, blacksmiths; Luellen & Bro. grocery and harness; J.W. Lake, dry goods.
Correction: John H. Moore former member of 36th Indiana Infantry.
L.J. Byer resides at Lincoln, Neb.
Jane Johnson died at Spiceland on Tuesday last, formerly wife of Josiah Small, settled 1 mile northeast of Spiceland 30 years ago.
R.M. Conway auction 3 miles south of Rogersville.
Mary, wife of Isaac Brown, died suddenly at home 5 miles northeast of New Castle on Tuesday last. Mother of James Brown and Rachel Mendenhall.

Feb. 23, 1871
Richmond: Mrs. Curme, M.E. minister's wife, attacked Anton Egli, German merchant, for insulting her. Convicted of assault & battery.
Fires in New Castle: Miss Emma Shawl & sister millinery shop; Christian Ehman stable; Oliver Evans stable; E.B. McMeans stable.
Will Shirk, son of Christian Shirk, built clock.
Mrs. Elizabeth Oliver died Feb. 19 at resident of brother-in-law Nathan Canaday.
D.B. Hiatt, brother of H.H., visiting from Kansas. Has resided in west for 16 years.
