Kennard, Ind. Our Town - 1887

New Castle Democrat
As it appears to be the custom to occasionally give a history of Henry county towns, we herewith hand the readers a brief sketch regarding our little village.
Kennard is situated eight miles west of New Castle, on the J. B. & W. Rail Road, and is surrounded by one of the most beautiful and productive farming regions the county affords, the farms all being very well improved. Our town, while but little over four years old, has a population of two hundred, with fifty dwelling houses, eight of which were built last season, besides numerous other buildings.
The businesses represented here are as follows: Two general stores, which carry stocks of dry goods, notions, groceries, hardware and boots and shoes; two hardware and grocery stores, one drug store, one barber shop and oyster room, one meat market, one boots and shoes, two blacksmith shops, one wagon and carriage maker, one dealer in agriculture implements, one broom factory, one carriage trimmer, one notary public, one justice of the peace, two doctors, one church building, one school building just completed and capable of seating eighty scholars, one Odd Fellows' Lodge, one large grain elevator and corn sheller, one heading and stave factory, one saw and planning mill and lumber yard, which also manufactures furniture moldings, and wire picket fence.
New goods, consisting of dry goods, groceries, etc, are being placed in shape in the new rooms south of the railroad, and will be ready for inspection by the last of the week, while those north of the railroad will be filled with hardware, groceries, etc. and will be open and ready for business by the last of next week.
This coming season 2we will have a brick and tile factory, a new church building, and equally as many new dwellings are on course of construction as were built last year, The demand for lots has been so great that a new tier has been laid off by surveyor Cook, this week, on North Main street. This makes the second addition to the original plat. There is still a splendid opening for a flouring mill and harness shop.
     P. S. ---- This is no place for loafers, as we find work for all.
