Maxwell Corner Stone Is Laid Today

Saturday, June 22, 1907

The Event is of Vast Importance in New Castle's History

Officers of the Jr. O. U. A. M. order will place the granite block

The laying of the corner stone at the great Maxwell-Briscoe automobile factory this afternoon is an event of vast importance to the whole city. It means that a great industry is merely being commenced. The foundation of a Greater New Castle is being laid and the city structure will soon be more manifest then at present.
Upon the arrival of the parade at the factory the ceremonies will be commenced. The Junior Order of United American Mechanics will lay the corner stone in an impressive manner. The ritualistic service of the order will be pronounced by Elwood Lawson, W. A. Fox, John K. Burgess and Ed Smith, with Ed Jackson presiding. State Councilor Thompson of Dunkirk will be here among the guest of honor.
Previous to and immediately following of the corner stone addresses will be made by various citizens. Vice-President Fairbanks is the orator of the day.

The Corner Stone

The corner stone is nice handsome granite cube 32x24x10 inches and bears the following inscriptions "This factory built by the Maxwell-Briscoe Motor Company 1907." The stone will contain copies of the local newspapers, New Castle Democrat, the Courier and the Daily Courier along with various documents showing the officers and board of directors of the company together with a detailed account of the laying of the corner stone and much valuable data and information concerning the building of the factory.

The Arrival of Guest

Guest attracted here by today's event began arriving on Friday. The New York and Detroit visitors did not arrive until this morning, owing to the failure of the train connections. The party from New York is made up of Eastern capitalist who are financially interested in the Maxwell-Briscoe Company and allied interest. The same is true of the Detroit party.
Automobile people are here from Anderson, Kokomo, Knightstown, Greenfield, Richmond and intermediate points. The largest delegation arrived from Indianapolis and all will participate in the parade this afternoon.
