Accidently burned by explosion of can of kerosene while attempting to start fire, according to death certificate and obituary.
New Castle Democrat, New Castle, Indiana Friday May 14, 1922 Vol 37, No. 21 Page 1 Col. 5
Obituary for Anna M. Phares.
Mt. Summit - Mrs. Anna Mary Phares, aged 73 years was burned to death this morning about 5 o'clock in a coal oil explosion at her home here, while she was engaged to start a fire in the kitchen range. Mrs Phares and her daughter, Mrs Lillian Peed, lived together and this morning Mrs. Phares arose shortly before 5 o'clock. The daughter heard the mother about the kitchen but she did not arise at that time. Later Mrs. Phares left the house returning a moment later found that the fire she had started was all but extinguished. Thinking to hurry it up she poured coal oil on the embers from a can. While doing so an explosion occurred, which blew the can to bits and scattered flaming oil on the clothing of the aged woman and about the kitchen. The report of the explosion was heard by many and the daughter, Mrs. Peed rushed to the kitchen to find her mother laying face down on the floor. Neighbors hearing the explosion and seeing the flames rushed in and reached the body of Mrs. Phares. There was no sign of life until she was turned over. She then breathed for a few moments. Dr. Marshall residing nearby was among the first to arrive and he stated that Mrs. Phares was unconscious and died within ten minutes after the explosion. The woman's clothing was burned entirely away and she was literally roasted alive The flesh was incinerated from head to foot. Dr. Marshall stated that there were unmistakable signs that the woman had inhaled both fumes and flames and that this rendered her unconscious and that she had suffered no pain. Coroner Weaver was called from Kennard and made an investigation. His verdict will more than likely be "cause of death by accidental burning."
W. A. Fox was called from New Castle to prepare the body for burial. Mrs. Phares resided here for about fifteen years and was well known. She is survived by four children. They are John Phares of New Castle, Mrs. Peed, with whom she lived, and Mont and Charles Phares. (No mention of Frances M. Phares Brown, daughter) The funeral will be held from the church here on Friday morning at 10 o'clock and the remains will be taken to the Hagerstown Cemetery for burial.
