This old cemetery is located on West Main Street in beautiful downtown Spiceland, IN, just north of the Friends church. It was the burial ground for the Spiceland Friends church, one of the earliest organized religious groups in Henry County. The first burial here took place in 1829 when David Davis son of Nathan and Lydia Davis was buried here.    Church trustees were elected on 7 Mar 1830 and on 6 Aug 1830 John Sheridan and Thomas Bond deeded to Isaac White, Obediah Small and George Evans, trustees of said church, the land for the erecting of house of worship for the Quakers of Spiceland and the land for a cemetery.    The little cemetery is still well maintained by the Friends church although there have not been any burials in the cemetery for many years. All local burials are now in the newer Spiceland's Circle Grove cemetery.    As with most old Friends cemeteries there are numerous unmarked burials in this old cemetery. It is known that there are several early African-American burials in this cemetery. All credit for this list of burials must go to Mr. Richard Ratcliff of Spiceland who originally entered the recordings in this index in the 1980s. Mr. Ratlicliff gleaned many of the burial records from the original church records and others from the remaining grave markers to compile this index. There were several eroded and unreadable stones in this old cemetery, so there are other burials in here, if you know of other burials in this cemetery please contact someone from the Henry County museum or notify someone from the church with your information.
