Wimmer/Pickens Burials
Est- 1840s - Liberty Township
This little family burial ground is located just east of the old Messick Road on the southeast edge of Ashland on the Larry Benson property near the railroad tracks. The Wimmer family supposedly first used it in the early 1820s. Peter Wimmer who first purchased the land on 17 Dec 1825 and later sold it to Elias Pickens sometime in the 1840s. After the death of Elias the land was sold and the Pickens family deeded the burial grounds to the Board of Commissioners' of Henry County so that the county could maintain it.
It was in very bad condition when Mr. Benson purchased the land. When he began to clean it up and cut the overgrowth, he came to a tree trunk he thought was dead. He realized just in time that it was a Woodsmans' tree trunk marker made out of stone. (See above Photo) He has continued to maintain the little burial ground as though it was his family buried here.
Jacob Wimmer, a veteran of the Revolutionary War is buried here, though no definite proof of this is known at this time. His son Peter's brother Jacob owned the land bordering his on the east.
