Devon Universalist Church Cemetery
(Christopher Long Burial Ground) Est- 1822 - Liberty Township
The Devon neighborhood located in Liberty Township in Henry County, IN is the location of the old Universalist church cemetery. Located at the intersection of CR #500S and CR #200E it at one time had several tombstones located here. Sometime in the 1940s the land owner decided to get rid of the stones so he would have more farm land, so he had several of the stones relocated to other cemeteries in the area, such as Batson and Wisehart cemeteries. Those stones that were not moved were bulldozed into a trench in the field and plowed over. The Christopher Long marker was just too huge to move, so it was left standing at its present location near the road.
The Anna Baker marker located in Batson cemetery was at one time located here, Her husband John Baker is supposed to be buried here. Old timers have told me that there were about twenty-five to thirty stones here at one time. I have seen old photos of the Long monument showing other tombstones in the field behind the monument.
The Long monument was struck by an auto a couple of years ago, but it has been completely restored and a new wrought iron fence erected around the monument, with new barriers installed to prevent further damage. The Henry County Cemetery Commission with assistance from the Liberty Township trustee held a rededication ceremony in 2002.
